One of Maui’s most authentic experiences — from the water up
If you want to go beyond the beach and connect with Hawaii in a meaningful way, an outrigger canoe paddle with the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Voyaging Society (HOCVS) in Kihei is hard to beat. It is part tour, part cultural immersion, part workout and entirely unforgettable.
When my friends and family come to visit, going out on a canoe is always the highlight of their visit.
What to Expect
You start on shore: fitted with a life jacket and paddle, given safety basics and a quick paddling lesson. Then everyone — visitors and club members together — helps carry the canoe down to the water. That moment sets the tone. You are crew, not just passengers.
Once you push off, the ho’okele (captain) steers from the rear while experienced paddlers guide guests through each stroke. Members talk story along the way, pointing out Haleakalā, neighboring islands, and the history that surrounds you. There may be chanting — the sunrise chant E Ala E heard across open water is something that stays with you. Most paddles include a swim stop, and you may visit the ancient Ko’ie’ie fishpond or spot green sea turtles resting nearby.
No two paddles are quite the same. The experience shifts with the ocean, the crew, and the energy of your group — and that is part of what makes it special.
Whale season (December-March) could hold some amazing moments. Many are the times I’ve heard visitors say that we made their dream come true after seeing whales from the canoe.
What People are Saying
This is a true Hawaiian experience. Not just getting to ride and row the outrigger, but the spirit of the club members, the Hawaiian history and chanting, and the journey perfectly timed to see the sunrise from the water. This is a small, unpretentious club and I am happy we got to meet the members, and know that our small fee also supports their heritage preservation. – Brad, Google Review

“Definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Maui. I loved paddling out on the ocean and getting up close with Whale’s. The people were friendly, inviting, and very knowledgeable about Whales and the Islands history and culture. Highly recommended!” Tim H. Google Review

Who This Is For
- Curious travelers who want more than sightseeing and are ready to participate in something real
- Families looking for a shared adventure that’s safe, accessible, and genuinely educational for all ages
- Anyone drawn to Hawaiian history, language, and living culture — chants, navigation, fishponds
- Solo visitors who want to meet people and feel connected to place, not just passing through it
- People who have been to Maui before and want a reason to see it differently
As someone who paddles with both HOCVS and the Mahina canoe club and helps lead visitor paddles — including chants and cultural sharing — I’ve watched this experience change people. They show up uncertain and leave elated. Some come back the very next morning and bring their friends. Hosting visitors on the canoe is genuinely gratifying, and that feeling is mutual.
Hawai’i is far more than a vacation destination, it’s home to a vibrant and rich culture that I’m honored to share with others.
